Portrait of ML Brei holding a book

A writer attentive to language, imagination, and change.

I seek to understand and communicate what it means to be distinctively human by considering the patterns that can be found across language, technology, and human experience.

My nonfiction brings structure to complex ideas; my fiction follows people navigating technological and personal change; and my reflective work looks for fresh meaning within familiar traditions.

Humanities and computing were never separate interests.

They became two ways of asking the same question: how do people make meaning, communicate ideas, and adapt when the tools around them change?

01

Smith College

I began in the humanities. My mentor and advisor, Bert Mendelson, helped establish a new degree in computer science just in time for me to become part of Smith College's first graduating class in the field. There were four of us.

02

Technology & teaching

After working at Hewlett-Packard for several years, I turned to teaching, curriculum development, and writing. The movement between technical subjects and human questions became a lasting part of how I work.

03

AI & prompt engineering

Through my consulting work at Joint Computer Technologies and Training Management (JCTM), I pursued sustained research into generative artificial intelligence and prompt engineering through both disciplined study and practical application.

04

Books & literary life

I founded Meripoint Books in 2024 and opened Meripoint Books & Writing Corner in 2026—a place for books, workshops, author events, and conversations among writers and readers.

Even the most complicated subjects can become approachable when they are presented in a structured and coherent manner.

A lesson that continues to shape my writing and teaching.

Technology changes quickly. The human questions last longer.

My work in generative AI led naturally to books and teaching focused on prompt engineering, language-model interaction, and the role of human judgment. I am especially interested in approaches that remain useful even as individual AI systems and applications change.

Across this work, I return to a simple principle: technology is most useful when people understand what they are asking it to do, why they are asking, and how to judge the result.

Writing begins a conversation.

Publishing, teaching, and the Writing Corner are not separate from my work as an author. They are extensions of the same interest in how ideas are formed, expressed, shared, and preserved.

Meripoint Books & Writing Corner gives that conversation a physical home through workshops, author events, bookselling, and opportunities for writers and readers to meet.

How does language shape what we understand?

Across my body of work runs a continuing question: what happens when a changing world asks us to see familiar things differently?
